How can we use technology to create flexible housing for young professionals?

Roomy: a coliving platform for LatAm

Co-founder and Director of Research + Design

Mexico City

I founded Roomy, a platform that helps struggling hotel owners operate their buildings as coliving communities. We assembled a world-class team of experts in technology, real estate, finance, hospitality, design, and marketing to re-imagine city life for young professionals looking for affordable and flexible housing options.

250+ user interviews, 5 focus groups, 10 online surveys, 80+ expert interviews, 3 co-creation sessions with users and dozens of prototypes

We set out to understand the pain points of young professionals looking to rent. Using online and offline research tactics, we worked closely with hundreds of real users to prototype new home search and booking experiences.

What did we learn?

We found an opportunity

And designed a new business model

We then partnered with owners of under-performing hotels to help them connect with new users

It was clear that the market was ready for our coliving model. And the question was - how to we build the product? By transforming old hotels into housing, we were able to solve two problems at once. For renters, we created mico-apartments. And for the hotel owners, we connected them with a recurring revenue stream not dependent on tourism.

With a user-centered approach, we redesigned the spaces

Through co-creation sessions, hundreds of surveys, and countless A/B tests, we were able to prototype and develop various room types.

We learned that young professionals were willing to rent smaller private spaces if they have access to ample shared amenities

The Roomy app is designed to deliver a friction-less search and booking process

With the app, we onboard under-performing hotels and help them find month to month tenants.
